Letter to the prime minister from local parent on 5th November 2001

Mr. Tony Blair, Dear Prime Minister, I am writing to you as I live in dread that you may proceed with the proposed paedophile unit at Silverlands. One of my children attends Lyne and Longcross school for children aged 4 to 7. Silverlands overlooks this school and the playground can be seen from the top floor. I do not think this is a suitable location for many reasons. Firstly, if you are treating someone for paedophilia whilst they can watch children play appears to exacerbate the problem in trying to deal with it. In all of the current research I have read the professionals have stated that they believe paedophiles cannot be cured. Why are we putting these people in a community that has 40 schools within two and a half miles of it, over 20 nurseries, numerous playgrounds and children activity centres? There must surely be a more suitable location in this country. Comments like all escapees have been apprehended within 2-3 hours absolutely enrage me. Lyne and Longcross is within a few minutes walking distance and it only takes a moment to snatch a child. It doesn't bear thinking about what atrocities could occur in 2- 3 hours! Parents today live with a very small risk of something horrendous happening to their child. But the risk to children in this area will be increased one hundred fold if the paedophile unit is approved here. If something does happen to a child will you be made accountable too? I am pleading with you as one of many very worried parents not to let this unit go ahead. The adverse affects on this community and risks to our children are just too great. Please don't be pressured by the money and work that has already gone into this project. Please let your heart and conscience be your guide in doing what is the right thing for our children.
