Surrey Police and Silverlands Action Campaign
Peaceful Protests at Silverlands, Chertsey.
|
People have the right to peacefully protest and Surrey Police will do all it reasonably can to facilitate this, although it will deal fairly and firmly with any breaches of the law by protesters. We will make every effort to ensure the safety of the public, protestors and the police, and that all protests are conducted in such a manner that any risks are minimised. Understandably those protesting against the Silverlands site being used to relocate the Wolvercote Clinic wish to make their protest outside the site entrance. However, this is a rural unlit road with a speed limit of 40mph. Pedestrians in the carriageway would create a severe hazard and barriers have been placed to separate people from traffic. Therefore in the interests of safety we would ask all protesters to remain behind these barriers at all times and also to refrain from attempting to stop passing motorists to hand out leaflets or sign petitions. It would indeed be a tragedy if a person was injured or killed as a result of this protest. The Force is happy to work with the organisers of the protest and has been pleased by the law abiding and co-operative attitudes, which have been displayed so far. If anybody has any questions about the policing of this protest they should be directed in the first instance to: PC Jon Savell, PS Bradley or Inspector Breslin at Addlestone Police Station tel 01932 845544 |
