News 24th October 2001

Dear All, Thanks for all your offers of help over the last few days. It's been a busy time for all. I wanted to update everyone I can with the main "news" and details of next steps, etc. I can't possibly include everything - mainly because as things are moving so quickly, it's impossible to know everything that's taking place. I will start to include some of the info you have sent, but will always take steps to protect confidentiality. It's best for you to mark any emails to this address as confidential if you do not want info to go out from now on. News! Website now up. Can be accessed via: www.chertsey.org.uk/silverlandsgroup
or directly later today at: Much more content to go up. Would welcome your help in providing content or ideas. You don't need to be a web expert! Eagle Radio/County Sound (96.4FM/1056AM) are broadcasting various interviews with local people/PH MP on the hourly news (although there's a lot of other big news around at the moment). Natasha (From County Sound) is planning to be at the site at 10.30am today (24/10/01) to interview "protesters". All welcome to be there. National press now starting to show interest. Daily Mail probably in touch today. Local press well on board by now and very supportive. Look out for the next editions. Planned candlelit vigil from 4pm onwards on Friday. Plan to get TV involved by then. Will update you with more details later. Local people have started to protest at the entrance of the site. This has ccurred spontaneously. People are angry and determined. The Police are aware of the protest on site and relations are good. We will be keeping them in touch about "planned events" as there are obviously public safety considerations. We don't want anyone hurt. Silverlands is on a busy and dangerous road. Leafletting/letters going well. More help/volunteers needed - particularly for future "planned" distribution to update non-internet enabled people. Council mtg on Thursday night. Not yet known when Silverlands item will be discussed - could be any time between 7.30pm and 11pm. Could be a long frustrating wait - and we won't be able to comment at the meeting. Would be worth having some people there to support our local councillors so if people can make it, please do. Still waiting to hear whether/when Beverley Hughes will be willing to meet. BNP (Woking Branch) are distributing leaflets in the area and have a petition started. Some of you will have seen or spoken to them. Silverlands Action Campaign has NO AFFILIATIONS WITH ANY POLITICAL GROUP. This is the community's campaign. There are signs that the Govt is not really planning to review its decision - only that it will review how it made its decision! We will keep up the pressure until the decision is reversed and a more sensible alternative is found.
